The story of this village is worth knowing!
Oimyakon is a small village in Yakutia, Russia. It is a home for 800 people who live in a fierce cold almost all year round.
Long nights last 21 hours here, and the average temperature in winter is -49 °F (-45 °C). The village is located only a few hundred kilometers away from the Arctic Circle, but it is quite a civilized place. In the village there is a school, which closes only at temperatures below -61 °F (-52 °C).
It's too cold to grow vegetables, fruits or cereals. The only food here is fish, reindeer meat, horse meat and milk.
It's strange enough that one of the most important sources of income in Oymyakon is tourism and one of the main attractions is swimming. Tourists take the challenge and jump into the icy water. The locals believe that this practice is a proven way to never get sick. They say it's not so difficult and scary to jump into cold water but to come out to the open cold air is a real test.
Professional photographers also don't miss a chance to capture magic and beauty of severe everlasting cold.
If you live in Oymyakon you won't be surprised that ink in your pen freezes or batteries lose power. The locals keep their cars running because if they don't they will never start a car again.
Have you heard about this village before? Can you imagine how cold it is? Could you survive such weather conditions?
