Elizabeth Alexandra Mary is the longest ruling monarch in the world. This woman is associated with authority and dignity. Let’s find out some little-known facts about her life.
#1 She became a queen at the age of 25
Actually, she was not supposed to become a queen. King Edward VIII, her uncle, was crowned king. However, he gave up the crown and Elizabeth's father came to the throne.
#2 The Queen met her husband in the childhood
They saw each other for the first time at a wedding ceremony. Later Elizabeth accepted Philip’s proposal without saying to her parents. They got married when she was 21 (in 1947) at Westminister Abbey.
#3 The Queen is fond of Corgis
These dogs are her favorite dog breed. Her first dog’s name was Susan. It was a present for Elizabeth's birthday.
#4 Little Elizabeth on the radio
In 1940, she made her first radio broadcast in order to support all other children during the war.
#5 She is a trained mechanic and a driver
At the age of 18, the future queen joined the women’s branch of the British Army. It was the time of World War II. She learnt how to drive a military truck and fix it. So, she is the only British monarch who can change a sparking plug. Furthermore, she is the only woman in the noble family who has entered the defence forces.
#6 The Queen behind the camera
Elizabeth's first camera was a Box Brownie, presented by her father before the war. While travelling she always has a portable camera in her bag.
#7 She can drive without a driving license
She is also allowed to drive without a license plate on her car. As for a passport, all of them in the UK are issued in her name, so she doesn’t need one. She has visited more than 116 countries during her reign without this document.
#8 An email from the Queen
Elizabeth II was the first ruler to use electronic mail. It happened in 1976. The email was sent from a British army base while participating in a network technology demonstration at the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment.
